Florence, Italy, Summer 1982
‘God creates us in his own image – which is as much as to say that man does. Ask a child to draw a picture of a person and that child will most probably draw a representation of himself or herself. How, as an artist – and artists are simply highly sophisticated children – to get away from the problem of projecting mere narcissism into whatever one creates? The answer lies in the words of Albert Camus: the artist must repeat the image not of himself but “of his own condition”.’ Journal, Saturday 31st July 1982
